BUTT:

Abney Park Cemetery in London is famous for being the first arboretum in Europe to be combined with a cemetery. It’s a very gorgeous and dodgy place with fallen tombs outcropping everywhere, squirrels and foxes around, and a beautiful landscape during every season. It’s known for all the cruising going on around the tombstones.I fancy cruising outdoors and I go there sometimes since moving to London from Jerusalem two years ago. This time I got naked and took some photos. Some men actually approached me but I was so into my own trip that I didn’t even notice them watching me through the trees. My inspiration was something like ‘a living body among the deads’. I set the camera up on a gravestone, turned it on ‘automatic’…and these are the results.

  1. I agree as well…there are plenty of other wooded venues for this kind of activity. This is still a cemetary…if gays want respect and to be treated as any other member of society, then act accordingly. This is what gets thrown in our face in public discussions and used as an example of why were not ‘normal’. I’ve seen more interesting photo essays among overgrown ruined buildings that still give the same effects without disrespecting those buried there. Just as among the living, those that cannot speak for themselves still deserve a voice. Poor choice.

  2. I agree as well. I am a not a religious person, but I found the photos of the nude guy in the cemetery offensive. Especially the one humping the cross. Come on, have some respect.

  3. VERY DISRESPECTFUL – IS THIS WHAT WE AS GAY MEN AND THIS SITE ARE ABOUT. NOT SURE I WANT TO CONTINUE MY MEMBERSHIP!

  4. Disgustingly disrespectful!! No wonder gays are treated like evil beings by many religious people. These pictures MUST be taken down and squirt must distance themselves from this stuff!!

  5. lighten up they are pictures of a naked guy in a cemetery ,nothing more.If they offend you dont look at them.We have to put up with religious groups saying we’re evil and should repent.

  6. Lots of cruising goes on in London Cemeterys and I don’t have a problem with that.. don’t like the way he’s clambering all over the graves tho, that’s bit disrespectful.

  7. I understand what you guys are saying about being disrespectful. But the first picture looks as it was taken years ago, I know it wasn’t just liked the look of that one. The other 2 a bit cheesy for my taste.

  8. Also: Squirt didn’t take the pics people! So “blaming” them for it is a totally off the mark. Don’t like it go to the source which is Butt Magazine!!

  9. Desecration. This atheist is shocked.

First you post guys who have disfigured and desecrated their own bodies; now you choose to take this shameless creep to a pioneer graveyard for some dirty pictures? This is illegal in most cities, I hope you are arrested for perpetrating this disgrace.

  10. I like them. I think they’re whimsical. More so, I think the contrast of something beautiful and desirable is stark against the bleakness of death.

  11. No, SQUIRT did not take the pictures – but they published them. They ought to rethink their moral and legal policies. The gay community has enough opposition to cope with, without being tacitly in agreement with such offence against both religious and non-religious groups. A another member says, there are many other woodlands to take pictures in. The gay community needs to assert that we can behave in an acceptable way in public (what we do in private is OUR business only). As long as we continue to offend vast numbers of the community we will never be accepted. Respect and discretion are always needed.

  12. that is sick no respect 4 the dead bet he would not do that in a jewish cemetry shame on you squirt for putting them up

  13. I am impressed with some of the thoughtful comments written by some of the members, particularly ‘nankipoo’. I also believe the images are offensive and disrespectful. I suspect that if the negative comments continue to be posted that ‘Squirt’ will pull the images…probably for reasons that have to do more with money and profit than morality. Thanks to all the members who took the time to write candid, intelligent, thought-provoking responses. A marked difference compared to the superficial, boring, repetitive comments that are usually posted in this section.

  14. Seriously Men they are just Photo’s!!! I find some of the *Hate Mongering Comments* on this site, concerning Somebody’s Dick or the fact that some Dude has too many Tattoo’s more Offensive than these Image’s! Take a deep Breath before you TYPE your comments as they have an affect on someone else & Not always in a Healthy way! Religion doesn’t determine who we are Sexually, that’s Human Nature.. Live & let Live! Each to their own..

  15. I find it offensive for him to hump a religious symbol like this, just as I would if it were a Star of David.

  16. The making and publishing of these pictures is offensive and wrong in every way….

It’s left me undecided whether to go ahead with my intention of paying for full membership to this otherwise great site

  17. I have news 4 u, Soxcd…the way u “dress” could b considered “wrong and offensive in every way” by many others. And..let me make the big decision 4 u: drop the full membership. Hypocritical moralists like u r a dime a dozen. Have a good day!

  18. I guess it’s cultural. British cemetaries have been cruising areas down the years. My favourite used to be by the Earl’s Court bars. I doubt the dead were disturbed. Frankly I admire the quality of the photography, and the subject is most attractive. There are often memorials in parks and other cruising spots in North America. What’s the difference?

  19. I can certainly understand and empathize with the “offensive” and “disrespectful” comments posted here. I agree — I think there’s a time and place for everything (and Lord knows we as a community already have enough bad press to counter and answer for), and this isn’t it.

All things considered, however, I believe the photographer/subject got himself caught up in the cruising aspect of the location (he certainly wasn’t there alone, and his associates certainly weren’t there for a prayer meeting) and acted accordingly. Had he given the whole thing a little more consideration, maybe he would’ve thought better of the idea. Maybe, though I don’t think the photographer was making any more of a “statement” than capturing the sublimity and dichotomy of nature and man’s place in it — “naked outdoors is heaven anywhere,” as ChetF says.

Still, I find myself more in agreement with michaelovescock on this one. At the risk of misquoting him, I’ll just ask that you go back and read what he wrote — he said it very well.

Setting aside the situational controversy, I think the photos are beautiful. Very well composed, great tone and contrast. Nicely done.

And I’ll add one more thing. Yes, while it’s true that the dead (as represented by their tombstones here) have no say in the creation or existence of these pictures, what I CAN say is that, if I were lying under one of those monuments, I’d be honored and thrilled to have this man — who represents life itself, and all the beauty of men I’ve come to love and admire — captured on film in all of his naked glory right above me. If this be “disrespect,” bring it on. I’d rather have a beautiful nude man enjoying himself over my remains, than a bunch of faded flowers tossed on the ground in the name of propriety.
