The people of Detroit woke yesterday morning to find a peculiar present left at the site of one of their most beloved landmarks, a giant sculpture of the late boxer Joe Louis’ fist.

In what he claims was a “gesture of sympathy,” Detroit artist Jerry Vile left this giant can of Crisco at the base of the fist as a “magical Vessel of Hope” to help “ease the pain of Detroit’s bankruptcy.” The can sat at the site for nearly five hours while bewildered local news crews covered the “event,” all while not knowing it was an elaborate fisting joke that they were promoting on the five o’clock news.
