Hey, if you’re a New Yorker… or visiting… DON’T MISS THIS!
Join Friends of the High Line and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center for a slideshow, discussion, and book signing. Joshua David and Robert Hammond, Co-Founders of Friends of the High Line and the brains and brawn behind the elevated park, will reveal the titillating details of how they turned a forgotten urban relic into the best date spot in New York. “Behind the Bushes: The Secret Homo History of the High Line,” will be held on February 7 at 7:00 PM at the Center, at 208 West 13th Street in Manhattan.
The talk will be a mixture of playful stories and thoughtful discussion about the historical and contemporary relationship between gay men and changing neighborhoods, preservation, and design. Attendees will learn how the LBGT community has influenced – and been influenced by – the High Line, from the earliest efforts to save it through its successful redevelopment. While looking at how the LBGT community can win concrete changes in New York City, David and Hammond will also share stories of old Chelsea, legendary Roxy parties, and the adventures they had stumbling through the worlds of art, celebrity, government, design, and entertainment as they set about transforming the High Line.
After the talk and discussion, Josh and Robert will be available to sign copies of their newly published book, High Line: The Inside Story of New York City’s Park in the Sky. The book will be for sale at the event; sales benefit the ongoing maintenance of the High Line. A donation of $10 is requested; $5 for members of Friends of the High Line.
