I caught up with Drew to talk about life as a porn star, his jockstrap obsession, and the challenge of navigating social media censorship.

The origin story

“It all started on Instagram…” explains Drew, when I ask him how he got started in the world of gay porn. “My photos started to get more and more revealing, and with that I became more and more comfortable in my own skin.”

“Our generation of Millennials are more exposed to sex than ever. I used to be so vanilla, but through social media I discovered all the different types of fetish available, and I was keen to try it.”

“Way before I started in the industry, I’d watch porn every day. It would crop up on my Twitter on the way to work, I would Google porn stars on my lunch-break, and when I had a day off I’d watch porn around three times a day.”

“I used to be a bit shy, but I’m a total exhibitionist now. I like being naked, I like being hard, and I like it even more when people see me hard, and see me getting fucked. I just feel liberated by it. Also, I have a real fetish for being naked in public places. It’s a little risky, but it just gets my heart pumping – and my cock, obviously.”

Let’s talk underwear

“Jockstraps…” confirms Drew, when I ask him about what underwear he’s into. “I feel sexy in them – even when the cameras aren’t rolling, and no one is taking a photo. Arguably, it’s just numbers and it’s ignorant to think that life revolves around 100,000 Twitter accounts – it’s only a percentage of them you interact with, and an even smaller percentage that you know personally. However, it’s a numbers game.”

“To me, those 100,000 followers are people that have bought into my Twitter feed. I carefully spend time taking photos and videos of content people want to see. I create engaging posts that generate discussion, I take the time to read my comments, like them, and respond to them. I allow my personality to come through as much as possible to create a Twitter feed that’s enjoyable to followers but also showcases my work as a sex-worker and performer. I want it to be the one-stop shop to view my personal and professional studio work.”

“On top of this, behind the scenes, I have DM threads with fans and those who have invested in me from the start – of course, business takes place. I have conversations with other models, studios, directors, brands, charities, and blogs that invest in me and my brand.”

“On 19 August, after celebrating my 100K, my Twitter account was ‘temporarily suspended’ – I received an email stating that my header photo was too explicit and didn’t comply with their guidelines.”

“Did this bug me? Yes. Was I worried? No. It was a ‘temporary’ thing, so I just had to ride it out, right? Seven painful days went by, and I was getting nowhere. Then, on Sunday 26 August, I woke up to an email stating that my Twitter account had been permanently removed.”

“I felt like the floor had been taken from beneath my feet. Honestly, my heart sunk. Everything, lost!”

“I tried to contact Twitter to appeal the removal of my account, but I just got the same automated response – again and again and again. It was frustrating – I felt that a human maybe would of had the compassion to at least let me change my banner photo, but I was subjected to being rejected by a computer system.”

“I forced myself to get back on Twitter and open a brand new account. I couldn’t waste any time – my name, my brand, my work needed to be seen.”

“One thing that helped me keep it all in perspective was that one of my close friends was going through a really tough time. Moaning about my Twitter issue would have been an insult compared to his problem. I needed to be there for him. So, I kept my head down, and got on with it.”

“In the first 24 hours after setting up my new Twitter account, I had 6,000 followers. Within three days I had 10,000. I was beyond grateful! News of my account closure spread fast – that’s thanks to the retweets, the comments, and the posts from my friends, my colleagues in the industry, studios, blogs, devoted followers, new followers, simply everyone. I was humbled, and it gave me a new appreciation for the power of social media.”

“I’m now being more careful to ensure that I follow their guidelines. I take this very seriously – I have graphs. On my current rate of growth, I’ll be back at 100,000 followers by mid-January. I engage more than I did before, and I support my colleagues in the industry – censorship on social media is happening to a lot of people.”
