In 1902, president of the United States Theodore Rosevelt was hunting in Mississippi when he came across a bear cub. He refused to shoot it. The moment was then recreated in a cartoon by Clifford Berryman, and later appeared in the Washington Post. A New York store owner was inspired by the drawing to create a new toy and got the president’s permission to call it a Teddy Bear.
