The concept of a clothing-optional beach is pretty simple – guys get naked and swim. But there’s more to it than that.
When I was younger, I had weird prudish hang-ups that kept me away from super-gay stuff like a clothing optional beach. But, now that I’ve left my inhibitions behind me, I now plan my vacations to ensure that they include some quality gay beach time.
Obviously, I’m not alone in my appreciation of a clothing-optional beach. We ran a quick survey with our readers to find out why getting naked on a beach is high on our list of priorities, 77% of the guys who responded to our survey have been to a clothing-optional beach.

Naked Guys
If you’re into guys, then a nude beach is an ideal opportunity to admire naked men in all their glory. In today’s world, it’s rare for guys to just hang out naked. Even in the gym, where there’s a fair bit of nudity in the locker room, it’s more of a functional process of getting undressed and changed into your kit. The only other relaxed, let’s-get-naked, kick-back and hang-out kind of scenario is a sauna or steam room. Being naked with other guys is liberating and empowering.

Tan Lines
It feels awesome to have the sun’s rays gently toasting every inch of your body, to be able to wander into the waves and feel the water washing over you, unencumbered by unnecessary clothing. The downside to this is that you soon lose your tan lines. There’s something incredibly sexy about guys who have a sharply defined swim-briefs tan line – their bodies are tanned, and then their asses are contrasted in a lighter tone. But it’s a small price to pay in order to embrace the world of nude sunbathing.

Sex
82% of our survey respondents find clothing-optional beaches sexually exciting. Not all nude beaches are overtly sexual places, but some are. While there’s always something sexy about being naked around other guys, some nude beaches naturally lend themselves to taking things a bit further. Maybe there’s a secluded rocky outcrop, or some nearby sand dunes or forest area. Obviously, you don’t have to treat yourself to an anonymous hookup, but the option is there if you fancy it.

41% of our survey respondents have had a sexual encounter on a clothing-optional beach, and a further 14% of respondents have fantasised about it.

Diversity
I used to have the impression that nude beaches were for older guys that no one really wanted to see naked. That’s totally not true. Nude beaches attract a total mix of guys – all ages, sizes, colours. Guys that I find super-hot and guys that don’t tick my boxes. Nude beaches are also a great reminder that guys come in all shapes and sizes – there’s no such thing as perfect, everyone’s different, and that’s cool.
Hangups
Whatever your sexuality, guys think a lot about their dick.Is it big enough? Is it a weird shape? Will other people make fun of it? Spending a bit of time on a nude beach is a great way to get over all of that stuff. You quickly realise that everyone’s dick looks different, everyone’s dick looks a bit weird, and no one really cares what your dick looks like. That’s not to say that people don’t look, it’s some kind of innate human instinct to automatically check-out another guy’s cock, but ultimately no one cares. This is a good lesson to take into all aspects of your life – all that time trying to discretely get changed at the gym or the swimming pool, with a towel wrapped around your waist to protest your modesty, no one cares. Literally, no one cares.
Where to go?
Some of my favourite clothing optional beaches are:
Playa De Las Balmins – Sitges, Spain: You can walk from Sitges town to get this one – you’re heading beyond the church at Platja de Sant Sebastià. Follow the path alongside the beach, climb the hill past the cemetery. Alternatively, if you’re driving, park somewhere near the Melia hotel and it’s an easy walk from there. Of course, you could just stay at the Melia hotel and this would be your nearest beach. This is a mixed nude beach, with a strong gay area. Good swimming and a relaxed, fairly non-sexual vibe.
Platja de l’Home Mort – Sitges, Spain: Beyond the Terramar Hotel and a long walk past the L’Atlantida Disco is Playa Del Muerto. It’s a pebble beach and has a small bar. This is further than you’re probably expecting, but it’s worth the effort. I think the first pebble beach with a bar that you come to is officially called Playa Del Muerto, but you want the next one along which is Platja de l’Home Mort. A small beach bar that sells drinks and (I think) some food, the beach is mainly sand but quite pebbly, and the swimming is good. This is a busy, gay, nude beach. Some guys were wearing swimming trunks, but most weren’t. There’s a very busy cruising area in the wooded area just across the railway.
Playa Mar Bella – Barcelona, Spain: All of Barcelona’s enormous stretch of beach is pretty gay, but the Playa Mar Bella section is the official clothing-optional bit. There’s a bar selling drinks and food. A really relaxed and sexy vibe.
Turtle Cove, Australia: Just near Port Douglas, up in the tropical far north of the state of Queensland in Australia, Turtle Cove is an idyllic tropical beach paradise. Access to the beach is through the Turtle Cove resort, but it’s a public beach so you don’t need to be staying at the resort to access it. Lined with palm trees, and awash with warm golden sand, this is a clothing-optional beach where you can work on your all-over tan while admiring the dazzling blue water that stretches out to the Great Barrier Reef. Sex happens on the beach, there’s no need to be shy or discrete. The downside of this part of the coast is that you have to watch out for crocodiles and stinging jellyfish, but somehow that doesn’t spoil the appeal of this beautiful destination.
Playa del Ingles – Gran Canaria: This entire expanse of beach is all clothing-optional, and it’s all fairly gay. However the major gay concentration is at the Maspalomas end and centred around kiosk number seven. The vibe on the beach and in the water is pretty sexually charged, and the dunes behind the beach is where all the cruising encounters happen.
