The previous year, in 2023, Malta hosted Euro Pride, the culmination of Gay Pride celebrations across the continent. Over 25,000 people participated, with 15,000 visiting Malta from other countries to join the party. 

Where is Malta?

Malta is a small archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and the North African coast. The original inhabitants remain a mystery, though they constructed megalithic temples over 5,000 years ago. All they left were these huge buildings, which predated the Pyramids of Egypt. 

Since then, the islands have been inhabited and ruled by diverse empires. Most locals speak English, but the national language is Maltese.

What events can you expect during Malta Pride?

The 2024 Malta Pride calendar included the Opening Party, the NaviGay boat party, a gay art exhibit, dances, street fairs, empowerment workshops, the Pride Pool Party, and no Pride is complete without a Pride parade. 

The Pride festival centred around the Triton Fountain in Valletta’s Castille Square. Valletta, a UNESCO heritage site, is a city of only 6,000 people living inside the fortress walls. 

Valletta ended up being my base during my stay in Malta. On my first day in the centre of Valletta, I saw the sights, including St. John’s Cathedral, an incredible church with marble floors and masterpiece paintings by Caravaggio. There was also a “Meet Caravaggio” laser projection show featuring the artist and his works. 

What is impossible to ignore is the daily booming of noon and evening cannons by the Saluting Battery; it’s an exciting display of artillery power and precision, but it can be initially alarming during your first few days. You do get used to it, though. 

When evening set in, I found a gay-friendly place in the heart of town: Café Society, a bar/café where locals and tourists celebrate the nights. 

What made this place even more fantastic was that it hosts The Big Gay Art Show, an exhibit by local queer artists. The paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures gracing the bar’s brick and stone walls were erotic, verging on pornographic, some of them being very hot and a far cry from the works of Caravaggio. 

For me, the art show’s highlights included drawings of sexy guys sporting impressive cocks, rendered in dynamic lines of ink and pencil, and one group of works that incorporated needlepoint threadwork over drawings of studs in the full bloom of manhood. 

The Big Gay Art Show ran until the end of September, when the café hosted a silent auction with all proceeds going to the artists.

The next day, I went on a sea cruise to tour the other Maltese Island, Gozo and then stopped on tiny Comino Island to snorkel in the Blue Lagoon. 

Snorkelling was a joy in these sheltered, crystal-clear waters, where tiny, colourful fish were among sea-sculpted rock formations jutting over a soft sandy bottom. 

That evening, I searched for another of Valletta’s gay-friendly venues; this one I stumbled upon was Maori, a waterfront bar on the opposite north-facing shore. Finding the place took some time until I got on the right track outside the fortress walls, directly along the shoreline. 

Maori hosted the Pride festival’s launch party. I was welcomed by the bar’s owner, Simone, a charming and gregarious lesbian who invited me to join her on the patio. As the night progressed, a fascinating collection of characters joined Simone at our dockside table: lesbians, gay guys, artists, and fellow travellers. Our conversations were interrupted by the nightly fireworks display from across the bay at the city of Sliema.

The next night, I ventured to St. Julian’s, a scenic half-hour bus ride from Valletta. My destination was Malta’s only gay nightclub, Michelangelo’s. This club would be the venue for Malta Pride’s wrap-up party. 

Set on a sloped laneway called St. Rita’s Steps, along with dozens of nightclubs, bars, and “gentlemen’s clubs,” Michelangelo’s has a podium out front where you buy an entry ticket, which includes a couple of free drinks. 

At first glance, it looked like a tiny place with only a few tables and loud but danceable music. A few men gyrated around the dance floor, celebrating an end to the fun Pride festivities in Malta.

I headed for the bar to get a drink at the exact moment that another guy arrived.
