Bigbetter’s remarks explained the black viewpoint, but other historically discriminated groups have done the same. The Polish can call themselves “pollacks”, etc. It’s a way to take a derogatory term….seize control of it’s use; own it; disarm it; use it playfully, if you will, among those who it was intended to wound and demonstrate it is no longer a powerful verbal weapon, but ironically finds itself under the new master’s control of those who sought to use it to enslave. Is it fair that they only get to use the term with impunity…prehaps not, but it was primarily their battle and to the victors belong the spoils.

To hate and seek revenge is foolish…you have now willfully given control of your life to the very thing you despise…that obsession now controls your thoughts and actions…and is looking backwards instead of toward your future and the rest of your life. 23. Is the phrase “shuck and jive” inherently racist when used by a white person? If so, then all need to be condemned equally. Besides Palin, a conservative, we need to look at other political persuasions who often seem politically correct. This is not to defend her, it was an incredibly inept choice of phrase or prehaps racist after all…that each of us will decide. But what about Gov. Cuomo’s use of it discussing candidate Obama in 2008, Chris Matthews using it with Rachel Maddow on national TV in 2010 or even Obama’s Press Secretary using it with the Press Corp in Sept. 2011? Context is important and prehaps the defining tipping point and a pattern of abuse is necessary. The charge of ‘racism’ needs to be leveled carefully and with thoughtfulness, otherwise it loses its power and becomes meaningless.
