San Francisco has long pushed culture boundaries, radical self-expression and sexual freedom. Today awash in stories of the changing face of the city and its quickly eroding creative communities, “Folsom Street” joyously celebrates the rich history of diversity that pushes the limits of raw sexuality that make this city the exciting cultural haven that it has always been.

Directed by Aron Kantor and featuring Broadway performer Colin Cunliffe, notorious nightlife promoter Mario Diaz, gender-queer drag queen Grace Towers, and a variety of San Francisco dancers and performers, the film serves as both a metaphor for the Folsom Street Fair and an example of the possibilities of queer community effort and activism.

  1. If you’ve never been to Folsom, you gotta go! It’s a nonstop, wild street party for the week. Friends had me up for Dore Alley in late July which is Folsoms little brother party. Mario Diaz, the guy with the ’70s porn stache, is a great promoter. He does the local parties at Fubar, Akbar and “Brutus” at the Faultline in Silverlake/WeHo. Mr S usually comps me a full pass for all the gear I buy for my clients, so I should plug them here…lol. All the Fundies swear it a sign of the Apocalypse, so better go before the world ends and find your own ‘rapture’. While your up there, check out “The Armory” where this was shot. You’ve seen it in Kink Productions. Grrr!

  2. That was the QUEENIEST SHOW FOR THIS DAILY SQUIRT, I REALLY HATE TO SEE GUYS ACT TGHIS WAY< BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT THE HETEROSEXUAL POULATION THING OF US ALL, TOO BAD YOU HAD TO PUT THIS ON YOUR GREAT SITE, HATED IT!!!!

  3. What can I say…bad dancing, bad choreography, bad “costumes”, and (sad to say) it just reinforces how the straight world views us. Next…

  4. I agree with the naysayers, I can’t watch the video because I already know what I’m going to get. Stereotypes are the bane of every culture’s existence, and fueling it gives homophobes all the power (and the right to steer clear). Sure it’s an aspect of our visage, but parading around like “Village People” is kind of off-putting, even to me. Don’t let sexuality become your entire identity, it’s just a piece of us, not our entire framework.

  5. I agree with SDTony and Deeptongue about the drag queens, etc, but you go to Folsom let loose in a uniquely gay city. County Fairs, Vegas, Spring Break, Mardi Gras, etc are all about excess and hedonism. It doesn’t mean you endorse or approve of everything you see. Nor would you assume it reflects society at large. If Folsom was a week long, high toned cultural Festival of the Arts, the media would gloss over that quickly to spend 5 minutes on the drag queens. “If it bleeds, it leads”. The media is sensation driven by things out of the vanilla norm. You can’t live your life seeking other’s acceptance of what’s correct In their minds. Though the public attitude toward gays has softened and we have new legal choices and protections, don’t confuse tolerance with acceptance. We’ll be perceived as being on the edge of society for years to come. Why worry. Life is a buffet, take what you like and leave the rest. Go have fun.

  6. fuck what straight people think!…like it or not stereotypes exist…drag…leather…bears…they are a real part of our subculture, and god love ’em…the beauty of an event like folsom (yes, I’ve been…several times) is the total freedom to be whoever you are without being judged…the unexpected sights and sounds are what makes it fun…the absurdity of it all…we can walk around in three piece suits (hot!) and go to church every sunday, but as long as we like dick straights will look down on us…so embrace our differences and stop judging…I’m a homo, you’re a homo, he’s a homo, we’re all homos…wouldn’t you like to be a homo too?…
