National Coming Out Day was first celebrated on October 11, 1988, exactly one year after the historic March On Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Today we mark the 24th National Coming Out Day, and continue to celebrate it as a day when lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies proudly share who they are and encourage those who aren’t out of the closet to join them in an effort to ignite and increase discussions of and about the LGBT community.

When it comes to visibility and impact, it can be argued that celebrities have an especially large role in shaping the way mainstream society views an issue. Until recently, coming out of the closet could trigger the end of a star’s career and even now many in Hollywood remain in the closet. But more and more celebrities are opening up about being gay and, thus, changing and broadening understanding about who could potentially be LGBT.

Lady Bunny, female impersonator, tells her ‘coming out’ story. It sounds like is wasn’t a big surprise for anyone… until it came to the sex part.

Dan  Savage offers some advice for kids coming out on National Coming  Out Day (and in general) to MTV News:

“Coming out is not the solution to your problems,” he admitted. “Coming out  is often the beginning of new problems. … We shouldn’t just blindly encourage  kids to jump out. They need to come with a plan: who your parents are, friends  are, whether you’re going to have support and then line up that support.”

Porn Star Eddie Stone tells us his coming out story. Eddie knew he was gay since having a grade school crush but it was his mom who forced him out of the closet.

On his newly revamped daytime show Anderson Live, Kristin Chenoweth  discussed Anderson’s “big summer”, asking him what it was that made him decide,  at this particular point, to come out of the closet.

Said Cooper:

“It just got to the point where — I’ve been torn for a long time between a  desire as a reporter to just do my job and be known as a reporter — and at the  same time I do think visibility is important. I do think that the tide of  history only moves forward when everyone is fully visible….I didn’t want to  send a message that there was anything I was ashamed about or unhappy about or  not comfortable with. That was the main thing for me. I appreciate all the  support I got and all the encouragement. I am the same person I always was, I do  the job just the same way.”

  1. what a stupid idea … no-one should EVER be forced or pressured tp “COME OUT” … read carefully the warning messages some of these seasoned gays offer.

In some areas (like mine) it can actually be dangerous, due to rampant homophobia, and I have publically warned younger people to think very hard before allowing themselves to be pushed into exposing their sexuality publically,

Ultimately. it is no-one else’s business — it is a personal matter, and, contrary to popular mythology, it is NOT who you are, it is ONLY your sexuality — the world does not need to be divided up into GAY and STRAIGHT, to create yet another barrier — especially when such a huge proportion of the population, male and female, is BISEXUAL.

Notice how some of the above “coming outers” fit obvious wrong stereotypes? ANd admit they were FORCED out?

    WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
