Very powerful – on the day we remember the fallen who helped to forge our present.
Thank you for the tribute. I look forward to being “out” of the military one day and living life a little more freely. However, I do enjoy the work and the camaraderie of brothers in arms.
That is a touchy poem. Thank you all the soldiers who die or live for protecting our freedom. Love always, S.
As a Serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces like to take the time to thank all who took a moment to remember all who have fallen and all who still serve to protect our freedom thank you again LS.B. Canadian Navy .
It’s sobering to be reminded of how uniquely lucky our generation is. Not only can we (probably) live our lives in peace without having to go to war for it but, at least in the West, we can now live our lives as openly and as fully as we choose. I live happily and quietly in a land far far away and can confidently expect to live with and love My Man until a quiet death ends the magic. We all owe an enormous debt of gratitude and remembrance to our gay and straight forebears who have fought for this historic time both at Flanders and at Stonewall. And we must also remember that history proves that the pendulum of tolerance swings backwards as well as forwards and all we have can easily be taken from us. The price of freedom(s) is eternal vigilance.
An emotionally stirring piece of writing.
Thank you to the men and women who have fought and continue to fight so that I can enjoy peace and freedom.
It’s in the ancient Roman concept of ‘pietas’ that we hold a proper sense of respect, duty and honor to our families, our nation and the military that have given us such a rich legacy to enjoy. In this tumultuous world it we should remember:
It is the soldier, not the minister,
who has given us the freedom of religion.
It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us the freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us the freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the right to protest.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier, not the politician,
who has given us the right to vote.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.
Charles M. Province. 1970
We often take for granted those we owe our greatest gratitude. I’m the 14th generation in America…the family name is in U.S. history books from the very beginnings to this day…a proud legacy, but nothing gives me a greater sense of pride, patriotism and what it is to be an American, than to be in service to our veterans and their families. In war, there are no unwounded soldiers. Take some time to volunteer or send money to the inumerable groups that serve these brave and selfless citizens…anything is gratefully received.
To above service members and those not mentioned…our sincere thanks. Also kudos to Donkeyman’s fine words above as well….lest we forget.
Now this a post that I fully completely 100% endorce! Lest we forget!
Its not always about men, sex, etc. Sometimes you need to see what’s real…even here. Thanks!
Thanks for posting this Sgt Coach—it is because of the ultimate sacrifice made by those who fought and died at or came back from places like Flanders, Iwo Jima, the rice paddies of Vietnam and the current battlefields in places like Falujah—-this allows for those of us who come to a site like this—we can have the freedoms to be able to indulge a mix of our fantasies, desires, urges and the like here!!!
We should honor them and not forget them—and for those who do come back–I am a vet myself, getting my health care now thanks the VA–if not for them I might be dead thanks to some health problems I have experienced in recent years—I would urge those who are here no matter their political views here in the US—-to work to make sure that the VA continues to be funded to appropriate levels.
I say to the powers that be—if you really do care about the minority of us who did raise our hands, swore our oath and joined the service of our choice to “serve, protect and defend”–do not break the faith with us.
My time in the service, holy shit—was nearly 30 years back now—but if for any reason–I wished I was 20 or so years younger–if so–I would have gone back in to fight this fight now!! and if I died—so be it!!!! I would do it now again if I could and they would have me!!
