OMG. Its amazing how language can change throughout the years. In the 60’s this was absolutely OK and now we watch and think this must be a horrible joke.
The word “retarded” is completely valid. Anyone who has a problem with it needs to look up it’s definition. Yes, it gives us a giggle now, but that’s only because people began to use the word “retard” as an insult. Gay people were, and still ar to come extent, described as “homosexual”. This is perfectly acceptable (even if it’s not the individual’s preferred self-description). But calling someone a “homo” is not acceptable. Words only have power due to the meaning that both the speaker and the listener assign to them. Referring to a child with a mental disability as “mentally retarded” is perfectly acceptable if the words are spoken and heard in their literal sense. If you’re offended, it’s not just because of the meaning that the speaker assigns to the words they say, it’s also because of the meaning you assign to them.
