Hey, if you’re a New Yorker… or visiting… DON’T MISS THIS!

Join Friends of the High Line and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center for a slideshow, discussion, and book signing. Joshua David and Robert Hammond, Co-Founders of Friends of the High Line and the brains and brawn behind the elevated park, will reveal the titillating details of how they turned a forgotten urban relic into the best date spot in New York. “Behind the Bushes: The Secret Homo History of the High Line,” will be held on February 7 at 7:00 PM at the Center, at 208 West 13th Street in Manhattan.

The talk will be a mixture of playful stories and thoughtful discussion about the historical and contemporary relationship between gay men and changing neighborhoods, preservation, and design. Attendees will learn how the LBGT community has influenced – and been influenced by – the High Line, from the earliest efforts to save it through its successful redevelopment.   While looking at how the LBGT community can win concrete changes in New York City, David and Hammond will also share stories of old Chelsea, legendary Roxy parties, and the adventures they had stumbling through the worlds of art, celebrity, government, design, and entertainment as they set about transforming the High Line.

About the High Line and Friends of the High Line

The High Line is a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It is owned by the City of New York, and maintained and operated by Friends of the High Line. Founded in 1999 by community residents, Friends of the High Line fought for the High Line’s preservation and transformation at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. It is now the non-profit conservancy working with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to make sure the High Line is maintained as an extraordinary public space for all visitors to enjoy. In addition to overseeing maintenance, operations, and public programming for the park, Friends of the High Line works to raise the essential private funds to support more than 90 percent of the park’s annual operating budget, and to advocate for the preservation and transformation of the High Line at the rail yards, the third and final section of the historic structure. 1. I think a book about the secret Homo history of Brighton’s West Pier and Duke’s Mound would be very interesting.. going back to Victorian times. The demise of the West Pier was a blow to Brighton’s seedy and much loved gay scene.
