“The Homosexuals” is a 1967 episode of the documentary television series CBS Reports. The hour-long broadcast featured a discussion of a number of topics related to homosexuality and homosexuals. Mike Wallace anchored the episode, which aired on March 7, 1967. Although this was the first network documentary dealing with the topic of homosexuality, it was not the first televised in the United States. That was The Rejected, produced and aired in 1961 on KQED, a public television station out of San Francisco.

Three years in the making, “The Homosexuals” went through two producers and multiple revisions. The episode included interviews with several gay men, psychiatrists, legal experts and cultural critics, interspersed with footage of a gay bar and a police sex sting. “The Homosexuals” garnered mixed critical response. The network received praise from some quarters and criticism from others for even airing the program.

  1. Gay marriage is impossible if you believe any of this documentary. LOL, Oh….plllleeeeezzzzzeeee

  2. I just wish more than a few of these in your face, out of the closet, crusaders, would GO BACK IN THE CLOSET, Pad lock the door, and then have Mike Wallace nail it shut from the Outside, and build a Brick Wall in front of it. No matter what year or century it is, they’ll always be Trash.

  3. Does anyone recall another network news profile about gay men, that was broadcast in the late 1970’s? One segment I remember was a young hustler visits his mom & jock brother. Mom wants him to make better choices, while the brothers argue over who’d make more money tricking in the city. Would like to watch the whole program again.

  4. Gay men are still struggle for equal in States. Sorry for Gay American men. USA sends troops all over the world to promote freedom, democracy and equal rights for all but they do not give equal rights to their own people. I am glad that I live in Canada. We have a full homosexual benifits and protects and equality.
