Until the year 1971, being gay in Finland could land you in jail for years. There was a boy born in 1920. In his childhood, he drew pictures of naked men. While drawing, he wore only leather boots. As a young man, he fought in the war and had sex with his fellow soldiers, both Finnish and German. During his adulthood, he lived a double life. By day, a talented advertising artist and a pianist, by night a genius creator of erotic drawings.We remember him through leather, huge muscles, even larger cocks and humour — empowering the masculine gay man. I like Toms of Finland
On more than a few occasions Bob Mizer (AMG) and I had drinks and dinner and discussed Touko’s work. He had sent some drawings to Bob in late 1956 and was featured in Spring ’57 on the cover and inside of his “Physique Pictorial. Since beefcake mags were still controversial, Bob ascribed outside artists that he featured by a first name only basis . Touko thought he should ‘Americanize’ his name and chose ‘Tom’ as it was short and similar. Bob, in turn referred to the artist as “Tom of Finland” in his American premiere and the legendary name was born. Both would remain great friends till their deaths in the early nineties.Tom was fascinated by the post war American biker scene and that formed the basis of his archetypal “leatherman”. In 1978, Tom was joined by a Canadian artist, Durk Dehner, as a public relations specialist and in ’84 jointly formed the Tom of Finland Foundation here in the Echo Park section of L.A. Though his friend Aaron was his ideal leatherman model, Durk figured prominently in his drawings.
I hope this bio film turns out well. I called my friend over at the Foundation and they’re still working on their own version which should be out in about 2 years. They, of course, have all the original source material for a great bio-pic. This film isn’t sanctioned by them and when this film’s producers found out about the Foundations film, they didn’t request any more info from them nor talk to Durk who lives here as well. The cilp looks promising.
