What makes Munich worth visiting?

Before we even get to the potential for hookups, cruising, and guy-on-guy encounters, Munich is a beautiful part of Germany that’s definitely worth exploring.

Munich is the capital of the region known as Bavaria – it’s a city that traces its history back to the 12th century. The history of Bavaria is long and illustrious, and it’s a heritage that the locals are incredibly proud of and continue to enthusiastically celebrate.

When you think of old-world Germany, you’re probably imagining men in lederhosen, huge steins of beer, rich comforting food, and a love of music and dancing. All of that is firmly within the traditions of the ancient medieval kingdom of Bavaria, and it call all be experienced in the city of Munich today.

What’s the cruising scene like?

While Germany has a bit of a reputation as being an uninhibited, anything-goes kind of place, the Bavarian region has generally been a bit more conservative than the rest of the country.

There is a vibrant and visible gay scene in Munich, but it’s not as in-your-face as somewhere like Berlin or Cologne.

The Glockenbachviertel district is Munich’s gay neighbourhood, and it’s got the gay bars and bathhouses that you’d expect in a city of this size.

Cruising in bars

The gay bars in Munich are all within easy walking distance of each other, and it’s worth exploring and checking them all out.

They’re fairly small – when the weather is good most people drink outside.

On my recent visit, the bar I liked the best was Ochsengarten – which translates as Ox Garden. This seemed to be the main leather bar of Munich. It was small but friendly. There was a dark room where guys would go for an anonymous hookup, but sex also happened in the main bar and everyone was cool with that.

Cruising in bathhouses

The main bathhouse – right in the heart of the gay district – is the Deutsche Eiche sauna. It’s a big space, spread out over four floors, with all the facilities that you’d expect from a busy bathhouse.

Cruising outdoors

There’s a massive park in the centre of Munich. It’s called the Englischer Garten – which translates as English Garden. You’ll see guys sunbathing nude, and there’s a couple of spots for swimming. You’ll have to use your instincts a bit to find any cruising action – the toilets are usually the best place to start.

When the weather heats up, everyone heads to the banks of the Isar River – its gravel bed means that the fast-flowing water is incredibly clear and fresh. Make your way to the Flaucher island section of the river which is both the clothing optional and the gay area for swimming and sunbathing. There’s a handy bit of forest here where all the cruising happens.

Cruising at Oktoberfest

The first Sunday of Munich’s massive Oktoberfest celebration of beer is officially gay day. For one day, the Bräurosl beer tent gets taken over by the men who are seeking men.

The tent holds 8,400 people, but you still have to get there early if you want to be part of the action  –  once the tent is full, it’s a one-in-one-out scenario.

This is a great day – everyone in their lederhosen and eager for a long session of drinking beer and singing German songs.

The crowd is fairly international  –  a lot of Germans, obviously, but plenty of guys from across Europe. Pretty much everyone is wearing lederhosen, which is a total turn-on.

Food and beer is constantly available, with gruffly efficient waiters and waitresses working up and down the rows of tables.

As the day wears on, this get increasingly debauched. It’s in the toilets where all the action happens – given the amount of beer being drunk, everyone spends a lot of time in the toilets.

Use the technology and put Squirt.org to work to help you track down all the cruising options in Munich.

  1. Berlin always seems to get most of the attention – good introduction to Munich. Makes me want to check it out. Have to say, all of the pics were great.

  2. Haven’t been to Munich since 1985 but would like to go back some day, and for more than just what is presented here…

    • Haha – what’s ridiculous about it down_to_earth_man? It’s a gay travel feature. You’re not interested in travel articles? Gareth.

  3. I’ve been to both Munich and Berlin and, while Munich was certainly a pleasant place to visit, Berlin is certainly the place to go to if gay tourism is your main goal.
